Environmental 24-hr Cycles Are Essential for Health
Circadian rhythms are deeply rooted in the biology of virtually all organisms. The pervasive use of artificial lighting in modern society disrupts circadian rhythms and can be detrimental to our health. To investigate the relationship between disrupting circadian rhythmicity and disease, we exposed mice to continuous light (LL) for 24 weeks and measured several major health parameters. Long-ter...
متن کاملRats on 22.5-hr light:dark cycles have vaginal opening earlier than rats on 26-hr light:dark cycles.
Rats on 22.5-hr light:dark cycles had vaginal opening significantly earlier than rats on 26-hr light:dark cycles. This finding might explain the early menarche in blind girls: Their circadian rhythms, like those of rats on 22.5-hr cycles, might be more rapid than normal. Thus a set number of cycles can occur in a shorter time than usual, allowing puberty to take place early.
متن کاملDisjoint Essential Cycles
Graphs that have two disjoint noncontractible cycles in every possible embedding in surfaces are characterized. Similar characterization is given for the class of graphs whose orientable embeddings (embeddings in surfaces different from the projective plane, respectively) always have two disjoint noncontractible cycles. For graphs which admit embeddings in closed surfaces without having two dis...
متن کاملHow to Interpret Ambulatory 24 hr Esophageal pH Monitoring
Newer developing techniques for esophageal functional testing such as wireless pH capsule monitoring and esophageal impedance testing are currently available. However, ambulatory 24 hr esophageal pH monitoring is still widely used and provides quantitative data on esophageal acid exposure and the ability to correlate symptoms with acid exposure events. To properly analyze the result of pH monit...
متن کاملEvolving a 24-hr oscillator in budding yeast
We asked how a new, complex trait evolves by selecting for diurnal oscillations in the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We expressed yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) from a yeast promoter and selected for a regular alternation between low and high fluorescence over a 24-hr period. This selection produced changes in cell adhesion rather than YFP expression: clonal populations oscillated ...
